Karen’s Philosophy
Teaching Elementary Music is my niche. I believe music is an essential requirement for living. We are introduced to music before we are even born. We hear and feel the rhythmic beat of our mother’s heart. We can feel the accompaniment – swoosh sounds, walking and running steps, conversation, and other sounds and movements we cannot yet see.
Expanding your knowledge of Music by playing an instrument is a full brain experience. It fires up neurons in our brains. Music is Science, Math, Foreign Language, History, Physical Education, and Art. I teach Music to help you recognize human beauty and to improve academic performance.
I believe that younger students, starting at ages 5-8, need to invest at least five years of instrumental lessons to achieve their goal to play the music they like and desire. To play the piano you must learn all the necessary theory - like rhythm, scales, intervals, chords, etc. through games, activities, and practice. Some teachers and schools require competitions and testing. I do not. If my students want that, I will point them in the right direction to achieve that goal. Much like playing soccer, being in a play, cooking, drawing...it takes work and practice. If you aren't practicing, you aren't learning. If you aren't learning, you are wasting my time and your money.
